Stokes dismissed Gill and Sudharsan on Day 1 in Manchester

England definitely have an upper hand after the end of the first day’s play in Manchester. India finished the day on 265 runs for four wickets in 83 overs. Rishabh Pant’s unfortunate toe injury has tilted the day in England’s favour.

Shubman Gill yet again lost the toss as Ben Stokes asked India to bat first. Openers KL Rahul (46 runs off 98 balls) and Yashasvi Jaiswal ( 58 runs off 107 balls) added a 74-run opening stand.

India did not lose any wickets in the first session with England seemingly worried at lunch. It was yet again an inspirational spell from Ben Stokes that helped England hit India back in the second innings. He persisted with Chris Woakes, England’s best bowler in the first session and he took the wicket of Rahul to end the stand.

England Have Upper Hand At Stumps On Day 1

He then brought Liam Dawson from the other end, luring Yashasvi Jaiswal to go big. The left-arm spinner broke through on his Test return, getting the big wicket of Jaiswal, knicking him off to slips. Stokes then brought himself on and dismissed Shubman Gill for just 12 off 23 balls. The Manchester crowd then gave Gill a tremendous send-off by booing him on his way back to the pavillion.

India lost three wickets in the second session with England coming back in the game. In the final session, India scored 115 runs. However, the unfortunate injury to Rishabh Pant (37 runs off 48 balls) changed the momentum of the game at the fag end of the day. He played a few unorthodox shot and risking himself to take on Woakes, got injured on his right foot on a delivery which was a lot fuller. The ball hit him flush on his right boot and there was a swelling. He was taken out of the field and taken for scans immediately. The Indian team is still waiting for the result.

Ravindra Jadeja (19 * runs off 36 balls) walked out to bat after Pant’s retired hurt and was stitching a nice little partnership with Sai Sudharsan (61 runs off 151 balls). However, it was Stokes again who broke through dismissing Sai in the 74th over of the innings. Since then, it was Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur ( 19 * runs off 37 balls) who added 29 runs in 55 balls unbeaten as India finished on 264 runs for 4 wickets.

India Need Lower-Order To Fire On Day 2 in Manchester

India need their lower-order to fire if they are to post a score close to 400. One eye will also be on Rishabh Pant’s injury and whether he will be able to play any further part in the Test match and the series. Meanwhile, for England, Ben Stokes was the best bowler picking up two wickest for 47 runs. Woakes and Dawson picked up a wicket each.
